Later in the afternoon it might get too busy in front of the fountain. Sometimes police will tell you to move on if it gets too busy on the square in front of the Trevi Fountain. Safety first!

The Trevi Fountain lies hidden between a complex of buildings between Via del Tritone and the Quirinal Hill. Via del Tritone goes from Via del Corso to Piazza Barberini, a metro station on line A. Half way on Via del Tritone lies the new seven storey luxury shopping mall Rinascente. Via della Stamperia on the opposite side brings you to the Trevi Fountain.

You may also use public transport to get to the Trevi Fountain. The bus lines 52, 53, 62, 63, 71, 83,8 5, 160 and 492 stop at the station Tritone/Fontana di Trevi. The night buses N4, N5 and N12 also go to the Trevi Fountain.

The fountain has been renovated several times, most recently in 2014/2015 in cooperation with the famous fashion design company Fendi. The origin of the name Trevi is probably related to the fact that once three ways – tre vie – crossed each other right were today’s fountain stands. Another interpretation is the water once pouring into three tubs.

In the center of the Trevi fountain you can see a niche with a coffered dome. Four Corinthian columns carry the roof with the seal of Pope Clement XII. The four statues on the balustrade represent the four seasons. The inscription on the front of the main beam recalls Pope Clement XII, in the frieze below is an inscription, which thanks Pope Benedict XIV for the work done. Pope Clement XII didn’t see the end of the constructions, the fountain was only completed under the reign of Pope Clement XIII.

In the center fo the niche is an impressive statue representing the Ocean on a shell-like wagon carried by two sea horses. They are led by tritons and symbolize the two sides of the sea, one calm, the other turbulent. The statues on each side represent the fullness and physical health. The reliefs show Agrippa approving the aqueduct project and the Roman virgin showing thirsty soldiers the fresh water source, the fountain ends in a large rock dipping into the tub that symbolizes the sea.

Having thrown a coin and after visiting the Trevi Fountain you might want to explore this part of the city more. The following famous sights are nearby the Trevi Fountain:

  • To get to the Pantheon make a left in front of the Trevi Fountain and follow Via delle Muratte. This street leads you to Via del Corso cutting through Piazza del Popolo

  • If you follow Via del Corso to the right you will get to Piazza Colonna with the seat of government.

  • If you continue straight your way will lead you along Via di Pietra up to Piazza di Pietra with the columns of the Temple of Hadrian and on to the Pantheon. Making a left in front of the Temple of Hadrian Via de‘ Burrò leads you to the Jesuit Church of St. Ignatius.

  • Facing the fountain is the church of St. Vincent and Anastasius from the 17th century. It is about 100 years older than the Trevi Fountain. The front of the church is characteristic of the Roman Baroque.

  • On Via di San Vincenzo and then to the left on Via della Dataria you can walk to the Quirinal Hill, seat of the Italian president.

  • You can find a few neat restaurants and bars to the right hand side of the Trevi Fountain.
