Usually shops in Rome are open on the 31st of December. Most of them close early in the afternoon. On the 31st of December shopping is a nightmare because of all the hustle and bustle in Rome. I advise you to finish all your shopping the day before New Year’s Eve to avoid starting the new year in a hurry. Italian customs and traditions for New Year’s Eve in Rome

With time many Italian customs and traditions for New Year’s Eve have gone lost. However, two traditions are still carried out today:

  • Kissing under the mistletoe for the turn of the year: For New Year’s Eve Italians kiss under a mistletoe. You are supposed to wait until midnight. Place yourself under a mistletoe and kiss the person you love to welcome the new year. Undoubtedly the best way to celebrate the beginning of a new year.
  • Wearing red underwear on New Year’s Eve: At the time of the Roman Empire the color red meant blood and war. Throughout the centuries the meaning changed and the color red has become a symbol of luck. Mostly women (even though some men do it to) like to wear red underwear for New Year’s Eve. Hence, red underwear is one of the most wished for gifts for New Year’s Eve.

Thank you very much for this insightful article.
I really appreciate the amount of effort and research put into this piece of writing.

Me and my sister are travelling from the UK, and we are in the 25-30 age range, we are looking for a restaurant before the fireworks. Is there any place you recommend for NYE? Our plan is to have dinner and then watch the fireworks but we are open staying at a restaurant or roof top bar.

Currently, we are searching for lively restaurants, with a young, thriving and elegant atmosphere but still fun and safe.
We plan to have a meal and attend the firework display at the circus maximus. After we would like to visit a bar or rooftop bar or classy club or we could even stay at circus maximus if there will be a lively atmosphere.

    Thank you for this article.

    Best wishes,

    CH

It’s always complicated with the magic of the Christmas season on the one hand, but ont he other sometimes the frustration of not being able to visit the Rome top attractions… I’ve never been to Rome during that period but I will loved to! I recommend some very nice restaurants and bars, where it might be cool to go before the New Year’s Eve party, including rooftops with breathtaking views over Rome (good spot to observe the fireworks?). Thank for the article.
